47XX Modellers

The 4709 Group will build a tenth locomotive in Churchward’s 47XX series.

Designed to haul heavy overnight freight trains into London from the west and south west, the 47XX were powerful and before being withdrawn, often used on fully loaded weekend passenger excursions.

Many thanks to Simon Pearson for this Peter Grey original photograph. The photo shows 4705 at the head of the 1.20pm Paddington to Kingswear on 23rd July 1960 at Platform 1 of Exeter St Davids. The driver oiling 'round was Simon's grandfather.
